Password Security FAQ

How strong is my password?
Password strength depends on length, character variety, and unpredictability. A truly strong password is at least 12-16 characters long, uses uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols, and avoids dictionary words and common patterns. Our tool analyzes all these factors and gives you an honest score from 0 to 100.
Is it safe to type my real password here?
All analysis happens 100% in your browser using JavaScript. Your password is never sent to any server, never stored anywhere, and never transmitted over the internet. You can verify this yourself by opening your browser's Developer Tools (F12) and watching the Network tab — no requests are made when you type. That said, we recommend using a similar-but-not-exact password for testing, or trying passwords you're considering using.
How long would it take a hacker to crack my password?
It depends on the attack method. Our Hackability Timer estimates brute-force cracking time assuming 10 billion guesses per second (modern GPU capability). A 6-character lowercase password: under 1 second. An 8-character mixed password: hours to days. A 16-character password with symbols: millions of years. But remember, if your password is a common one or uses dictionary words, it could be cracked instantly regardless of length.
What are the most common passwords to avoid?
The top passwords to avoid include: 123456, password, 12345678, qwerty, abc123, monkey, 1234567, letmein, trustno1, dragon, baseball, iloveyou, master, sunshine, ashley, bailey, shadow, 123123, 654321, superman. If your password is any of these or similar, change it immediately.
What makes a password truly secure?
The most secure passwords are long passphrases made of random, unrelated words (like "correct horse battery staple" but even longer). Use a password manager to generate and store unique passwords for every account. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible. Never reuse passwords across sites. The best password is one you don't even know — let your password manager handle it.
How does Password Roast analyze my password?
We check your password against multiple criteria: length analysis, character diversity (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols), entropy calculation, dictionary word detection, common password matching (top 1000 list), keyboard pattern detection (qwerty, etc.), sequential character detection, repeated character detection, year/date patterns, common substitutions (@ for a, 3 for e), and more. Each factor contributes to your final score.
