Find out if you qualify for Medicare and which parts you can enroll in.
Who Qualifies for Medicare?
Age-Based Eligibility
Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65. You qualify for premium-free Part A if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters (10 years). If you have fewer than 40 quarters, you may still enroll but will pay a monthly premium.
Disability-Based Eligibility
If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, you automatically qualify for Medicare after a 24-month waiting period. People with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) qualify immediately upon SSDI approval with no waiting period.
ESRD Eligibility
People diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) who need regular dialysis or a kidney transplant can qualify for Medicare regardless of age, though there is typically a 3-month waiting period.
