Medicare Enrollment Periods Explained
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
7-month window: starts 3 months before you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. This is your best time to enroll to avoid late penalties.
General Enrollment Period (GEP)
January 1 – March 31 each year. If you missed your IEP, you can sign up during GEP. Coverage begins July 1. A late enrollment penalty may apply permanently.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
October 15 – December 7 each year. Change your Medicare Advantage plan or Part D prescription drug plan. New coverage starts January 1.
Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
January 1 – March 31 each year. Switch between Medicare Advantage plans, or drop MA and return to Original Medicare + standalone Part D.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Triggered by qualifying life events: losing employer coverage, moving to a new area, qualifying for Medicaid or Extra Help, or other qualifying circumstances. Usually 2 months.
Late Enrollment Penalties
| Part | Penalty | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Part A | 10% higher premium for 2x the number of years you delayed | Temporary |
| Part B | 10% surcharge for each full 12-month period you could have had Part B but didn't | Permanent (as long as you have Part B) |
| Part D | 1% of national base premium per month you delayed | Permanent (as long as you have Part D) |
